Financial Health Check
Score yourself across the five pieces of a sound financial plan, see exactly where the gaps are, and find out which area to tackle first — no sign-up, no jargon.
The short answer
A healthy financial plan covers retirement, protection, tax and cash flow, and estate — plus business planning if you own one. Most people are strong in one or two and have blind spots in the rest. This check scores each area, lists your top priorities with a short “why it matters,” and points you to the right advisor for your weakest area.
What the check covers
- Retirement. Income target, RRSP/TFSA contributions and room, CPP and OAS timing.
- Protection. Life, disability and critical illness coverage, and whether it is current.
- Tax & cash flow. Emergency fund, spending visibility, high-interest debt, year-round tax planning.
- Estate. Will, powers of attorney, beneficiary designations.
- Business (owners only). Succession, key-person protection, corporate tax and income strategy.
- Diagnose, not advise. It finds gaps and routes you to the right licensed advisor — no product pitches.
Financial Health Check — Frequently Asked Questions
It is a structured self-assessment of the main pieces of a sound financial plan: retirement savings, protection (insurance), tax and cash flow, and estate planning — plus business planning for owners. It shows where you are strong, where the gaps are, and which area to tackle first.
Each question is answered Yes, Partly or No, scoring 2, 1 or 0. Every planning area gets a score out of 100, and your overall score is the average of the areas that apply to you. If you do not own a business, the business area is left out entirely so it never lowers your score.
No — it is useful. Most Canadians have gaps in at least one area, and the point of the check is to find them before they matter. The priorities list tells you what to address first, and a licensed advisor can help you close the gaps in the right order.
No. The check identifies gaps and points you to the right planning area; it does not assess your full situation or recommend products or strategies. Personalized recommendations come from a licensed advisor.
Once a year, and after any major life change — a new child, a home purchase, a job change, a divorce, starting or selling a business, or approaching retirement.
